Ten Things I Love About Living In Exeter

Exeter is a beautiful city with so much history throughout. There are wonderful eateries, views and events that compliment this city’s 2000 year history. I am lucky enough to have lived in the county of Devon all my life, so if you’re considering to visit or relocate to Devon, or even if you’re just plain nosey, here are my top ten things I love about this beautiful city.

1. The Cathedral.

I feel that Exeter cathedral was spoilt on me growing up. I’ve lived in Exeter all my life, the cathedral was always there – we’d visit on trips with school, we’d sit on the grounds at the weekend, it was never much of a novelty until I was an adult.

A couple of years back, my boyfriend and I went inside because there was an event near Christmas time that let you go in and have a look around, and learn a bit of its history. We were both fascinated with the beauty and history of it, so when I’m sat there now, I try to appreciate it a little more.

2. The Nightlife

If you’re a a bit of a party animal, you probably wouldn’t agree with me because I’ve heard lots of people say that the clubs aren’t great. I’ve only been clubbing a handful of times in the last few years so it’s still new enough for me to appreciate the clubs. Now I don’t go ‘out out’ as much, there are so many lovely wine bars, cocktail bars and live music. There is plenty of this around Exeter which is why this is one of the reasons I love it here.

3. The community

No matter where you go, there’s always going to be some people that aren’t ‘your people’ (trying to be diplomatic). Having said that, in Exeter the people are generally really nice people. Every bus I get on, people chat. If I have a nice dress on, people will compliment you. I’ve got friends from all over the UK, and from what I’ve heard from them, it’s not like this everywhere. I really like that people are so friendly around this part of the country.

4. The Quayside

I love the quay in Exeter. It’s a beautiful place to go for walks, visit the restaurants, and even have go at some water sports and climbing.. My boyfriend and I often go down there to see the ducks (he loves ducks!), and there’s frequently events down there such a boat races, live music and fairs. If you’re going to Exeter, I would highly recommend visiting the quay.

5. The University Grounds

I am lucky enough to live a stones throw away from the university grounds. It is one of my favourite places to walk and there’s so much open space. We often go down there in summer evenings to see the ducklings – they have such beautiful ponds.

6. The Views

Devon is known for its gorgeous views. Even at the top of some department stores, eg John Lewis and Debenhams, you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful city and the cathedral. In my old house we lived right at the top and we had a wonderful view of the city. If you’re visiting Devon make sure you bring your camera to capture the beauty of this county!

7. Cycle Paths

If you like to cycle, Exeter is a great place to go. There are so many beautiful cycle paths around Exeter, it’s just a short ride to beautiful pubs on the waterfront such as Double Locks. It’s also within cycling distance to several beaches with a beautiful scenic route – perfect for a spring ride.

8. The Beaches

This taken me on to the beaches. We have two coasts down in Devon, and my favourite has to be in the southern part of the county. They are so many beaches within quite a small radius, some with piers but all with beautiful views. And if you’re a child at heart like me, the arcades are a great place to to have some fun.

9. The Moors

We are so lucky here to have Dartmoor and Exmoor. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a trek up to one of the many tors. And if you’re not quite the adventurous type, it’s still a beautiful drive where you can see for miles and visit some lovely little pubs -definitely worth a visit.

10. Northernhay and Rougemont gardens

Rougemont gardens were part of Exeter castle’s defences, featuring the Roman city wall. It was then converted in the late 18th century to beautiful gardens. I’ve walked around these gardens many times, and I love that it’s so close to the library (what do I sound like) so I’d grab a book and sit by the trees. Here you can attend organised walks, open air cinemas, and exhibitions – or just take a walk and take in the gorgeous scenery.
